Most of us want to give our children the advantages in life we never had. Unfortunately, poverty usually is passed from generation to generation. One of the contributing factors is lack of education. By emphasizing the need for reading to our children daily, we aim to break the cycle of poverty. Here's how: Children who are read to daily are more likely to love reading. The more kids want to read, the more they will read (as they get older), and the better they will get at it. They will simultaneously gain content knowledge, vocabulary, and lengthen their attention spans too! Kids who come to Kindergarten ready for school are more likely to like school. Kids who like school are more likely to do well and stay in school. On average, high school graduates make more money than dropouts. The same is true for college. If we meet our goal, the parents who are a part of the Basic Reads program will read daily to their children, giving these children the skills and confidence they will need for school.
